The team of WSP and EXP is set to embark on a major project in downtown Montreal. The City of Montreal has chosen the companies to carry out Phase 2 of its Sainte-Catherine Street West project, which will consist of the redevelopment of a 1.6 km stretch of the street between Peel Street and Atwater Avenue.

WSP will be leading the project with EXP acting as subcontractor. Leveraging their expertise in engineering, urban development and sustainable mobility, the two engineering firms will collaborate to complete preliminary studies, prepare plans and specifications, provide technical assistance and supervision during construction. The city says the major redevelopment project will allow for the revitalization of the area’s iconic commercial street into more welcoming and versatile spaces.

The selected design includes areas where pedestrians can relax and connect, added urban furniture, green islands, increased space for pedestrians, and lighting systems to create a unique atmosphere at night. Phase 2 redevelopment will build on design components implemented in previous phases, ensuring continuity and consistency with work completed on the street during the first phase of the project.

“The second phase of the project will transform how people interact with Sainte-Catherine Street, further promoting road sharing between pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists,” explained Sophie Ménard, regional director for infrastructure at WSP Canada. “At the end of the project, in 2031, the entire section between De Bleury and Atwater streets will have been redeveloped, for an even more positive experience for Montrealers and tourists.”

“The complexity of projects of this magnitude is a challenge in itself, but the experienced EXP and WSP teams working on the project will bring the necessary skills to complete the work and provide solutions to minimize impacts on businesses and users,” added EXP’s senior director of infrastructure, Gabriel Soufo.
