Construction crews have started work on a new hospital in Markdale, Ont. to replace an aging facility in the small town southeast of Owen Sound.
The new rural hospital will cover 68,000 sq. ft. and include a 24/7 emergency department, a pair of ambulance bays and a larger space for outpatient care. Costs for the project are expected to total $56 million.
The Ontario government and Grey Bruce Health Services awarded Bird Construction Inc. the contract to build the facility after a call for tenders last summer. The contractor officially began work at the site this week.
“This is the news we have been waiting for, and we are extremely pleased to begin construction of a brand new, state-of-the art hospital in Markdale,” Gary Sims, the president and CEO of GBHS, said in a release.
Construction is scheduled to take about two years, with the new hospital beginning to serve patients in 2023.
