Work starts on new Corner Brook hospital; $750M project to last four years

CORNER BROOK, N.L.—Work trailers, crew and the big iron has begun arriving at the site of a new hospital in western Newfoundland.
Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador Dwight Ball was among the officials last week to officially kick off construction at the job site in Corner Brook.
“It gives me great pleasure to see construction beginning on the new hospital for western Newfoundland,” he said in a release. “We look forward to seeing the progress of construction over the next few years and to the day when the Corner Brook facility is providing residents in the region with improved health care in a modern environment.”
The province awarded a $750 million design, build, finance and maintain contract for the project to the Corner Brook Health Partnership consortium earlier this year. PCL Constructors Canada Inc. and Marco Services Ltd. will take on the design-build stage of the work, which is expected to last about four years.
The 600,000 sq. ft. facility will eventually stand seven stories and replace the aging Western Memorial Regional Hospital, which the province has been working to retire for years. The project is expected to give the construction industry on Newfoundland’s west coast a boost. The Transportation and Works department plans to hold a job fair this September.
Early work, such as setting up perimeter fencing, will run throughout August before excavation begins in September. The first concrete for the building’s foundation is scheduled to be poured by October.
Work on the hospital is scheduled to be complete by 2023.
