CALGARY—A veteran member of Canada’s construction industry and the president and CEO of Graham Group, died suddenly last week, according to a statement from the company’s executive team and board of directors.

“With heavy hearts, the employees and leadership team of Graham Group Ltd. are letting our partners, clients and stakeholders know of the sudden passing of Grant Beck,” the June 7 statement said.

“Grant loved Graham. He believed strongly in the resilience and longevity of Graham’s 93-year-old, employee-owned business model,” the statement continued. “Graham will continue to demonstrate the commitment, integrity and reliability that Grant demonstrated and instilled in all of us while serving as our leader.”

Beck joined the construction industry more than 40 years ago after earning a civil engineering degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1977. He spent 29 years with Graham, working on and spearheading a wide range of infrastructure, multi-unit residential and institutional projects across both Canada and the U.S.

He took over the helm at the Calgary-based contractor in 2012 and was planning to retire early next year.

Andy Trewick, who has been serving as the company’s chief operating officer, was scheduled to succeed Beck as Graham’s president and CEO Jan. 1, 2019. With the full backing of the executive team and board, Trewick will instead take over the position immediately.

“In the days ahead, Graham will be paying tribute to Grant’s exceptional career and many accomplishments, the statement said. “We will provide opportunities for his many friends and colleagues to participate or express their own sense of loss.”
