The contracts for four fast-tracked long-term care homes that will add nearly 1,300 beds in the Greater Toronto Area have been awarded to EllisDon and PCL Construction.

Infrastructure Ontario (IO), in conjunction with three hospital networks, awarded the contracts Dec. 17. All four of the new facilities are part of a pilot program launched this summer that combines an accelerated procurement process with modular construction on hospital-owned land designed to get the long-term care homes built and occupied more quickly.

EllisDon will take on the construction of two new long-term care homes tied to Trillium Health Partners on Speakman Drive in Mississauga, Ont., as well as construction of a 320-bed facility on the grounds of Humber River Hospital in Toronto.

The construction of a 320-bed long-term care home at the Ajax Pickering Hospital site in Durham Region will be PCL’s responsibility.

The province said the four the new buildings will include both private or semi-private rooms and operate on a non-for-profit basis.

In its market update released earlier this month, IO said all of the new long-term care sites are expected to be complete by early 2022.
