SUDBURY, Ont.—A $30 million project to construct a Francophone arts and culture centre in Sudbury, Ont. passed a regulatory hurdle Oct. 16, paving the way for the first phase of construction.

The City of Greater Sudbury issued a conditional building permit for preparation at the Larch Street site for the Place des Arts complex. Local contractor Bélanger Construction was selected to lead the first phase of construction, expected to begin Oct. 22 and wrap up in the fall of 2018.

Phase two of the project, which includes building construction, is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2019 and continue into 2020.

Located in downtown Sudbury, the facility will include a fixed-seating theatre, multi-functional studios, a contemporary art gallery, spaces for youth programming, a bistro and retail facilities.
