Lafarge educates cyclists on blind spots around concrete trucks during bike-to-work week
Health & Safety
Lafarge operates over 100 ready-mix concrete trucks which travel throughout Vancouver delivering to construction sites. “We are highly conscious of the risk introduced when these large trucks travel in close proximity to cyclists. Our drivers receive specific training to equip them with cautious driving behavior on urban streets. Bike to Work week was an ideal opportunity for us to reach out to cyclists and build their awareness of our trucks and their blind spots, commented David Beaupré, vice-president, Ready-Mix for the Greater Vancouver Area.
At three of the Celebration Stations during the event, Lafarge had a concrete mixer truck with cones highlighting the large blind spots cyclists should avoid when riding. In addition, Lafarge volunteers shared other useful tips such as the importance of planning routes, use of hand signals, and riding in a straight line.
“We were delighted to partner with Lafarge during Bike to Work Week to help spread important safety messaging,” said Laura Jane, the director of corporate engagement and events at HUB Cycling. “We also had record-breaking Bike to Work Week participation this spring and couldn’t have done it without the support of businesses like Lafarge.”
