Via Rail has shortlisted five contractors for modernization work on two separate maintenance centres in Montreal and Toronto.

The crown-owned passenger rail firm issued requests for proposals for the pair of projects Nov. 30, following up on requests for qualifications launched this January. Both modernization projects are part of Via’s Corridor Fleet Replacement Program, which will see new trains take to the tracks on the Quebec City-Windsor corridor

Aecon Infrastructure Management Inc., Buttcon Ltd., EllisDon Corp., Kenaidan Contracting Ltd. and Pomerleau Inc. are the five contractors to advance to the RFP stage.

Work in both Toronto and Montreal centres on preparing rail maintenance facilities to service the new train sets. Via said each project includes the construction of new buildings, upgrades on existing facilities and systems, and the installation of new maintenance equipment.
