Collapsed crane hits building in downtown Toronto, minor injuries reported

EquipmentTORONTO—Emergency officials say crews are working at the scene of a collapsed crane in Toronto’s entertainment district to try and prevent it from falling again.
Toronto police say the crane operator was able to climb down to safety and was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
They say two buildings in the downtown core were evacuated after the crane collapsed late morning July 16.
Police say some of the surrounding roads have been closed and they’re urging people to find alternate routes.
Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg says fire crews and paramedics are also at the scene of the collapse.

He said crews have to keep an eye on the weather as they work to secure the crane from collapsing again.
“We have to be very vigilant about things like heavy rain, wind and the potential of lightning,” said Pegg, speaking to reporters at the scene.
“We can’t necessarily prevent a further movement or failure of the crane at this point, but we’re taking every precaution that we can to make sure that it’s secured.”
