The Churchill Corp. announced that its general contracting segment Stuart Olson Dominion has been selected as the construction manager for the new $150-million Central Library in downtown Calgary.

The library will be central in revitalizing Calgary’s East Village neighbourhood and construction will involve a variety of technical complexities.

The Light Rail Transit (LRT) line passes through the building site, requiring that an encapsulation structure be built around the active LRT before construction of the main building can begin. The library building will then sit above this structure with the LRT remaining fully operational throughout each building phase.

Construction of the encapsulation structure is scheduled to start in April 2014 with the main building starting construction in September 2015 and opening to the public in 2018.
