HAMILTON, Ont.—The City of Hamilton has approved Waterfront Shores Corporation as the preferred proponent to deliver its $140 million Pier 8 redevelopment project.
The project will transform the city’s West Harbour into a 5.24-hectare community with residential, commercial and institutional space on nine development blocks. As the preferred proponent, Waterfront Shores will negotiate contracts with the city to purchase and develop the lands.
Comprised of Cityzen Development Corporation, Fernbrook Homes Group, GFL Environmental Inc. and Greybrook Realty Partners Inc., the consortium will target LEED Gold and WELL Building Standard certifications for the development. It also plans to eliminate natural gas consumption through wastewater heat recovery, geothermal heating and cooling, solar photovoltaics and battery storage micro-grids.
The new harbour front will include 1,292 condominium units across 20 buildings and at-grade townhouses on eight residential blocks.
The city will oversee roads and municipal services, as well as the Pier 8 Promenade Park. The design for the park was selected through a design competition that was held in 2017. Construction of these elements will begin in the summer of 2018.
Pier 8 is a component of Hamilton’s West Harbour waterfront redevelopment plan, which includes improvements to pedestrian access to the water’s edge, upgrades to boating and marina facilities, structural improvements to the shoreline and the installation of new fish habitats. A new waterfront commercial zone and public gathering place will also be developed on Piers 6 and 7.
