Construction Financing InfrastructureIQALUIT—The federal government has put up more than $26.2 million to fund a nearly $35 million project to bolster waste management in Iqaluit. The city is providing an additional $8.7 million.
More than $10 million of the total funding will go towards the construction of a new landfill, in replacement of the soon-to-be decommissioned West 40 landfill, which caught fire in June but remained operational.
The project also includes construction of a $19 million, 20,000 square foot waste transfer station, which will segregate waste streams. An extension of Upper Base Road will provide access to the new site.
Construction on the project is expected to begin in summer 2019. The city hopes the station and new landfill will be operational by October 2020.
Work planned for this year includes an archaeology investigation, as well as geotechnical and environmental studies, environmental studies and site surveys.
