Alberta has set aside $50 million for a road improvement project on a stretch of highway between Edmonton and Fort McMurray, Alta.

The province said the construction work will add passing lanes, a new rest area and improve intersections on the section of Hwy. 881 between Lac La Biche and Anzac.

“Highway 881 is an important route for heavy trucks, equipment and passenger vehicles moving north into Alberta’s oilsands,” Ric McIver, the province’s minister of Transportation, said in a March 10 release. “Upgrading this highway will make travel easier for drivers on this route by building passing lanes to get around the heavy and super-heavy equipment heading to our oilsands regions.”

Construction is still some time away, with on-site work scheduled to start in 2022. The province estimates the project will create about 150 construction jobs.
