Latest addition to Lehigh Cement lineup offers durability and reduces emissions

By On-Site Staff

Lehigh Hanson has introduced a new blended Portland Limestone Cement (PLC) across the Canadian Prairies that offers strength and durability while reducing the carbon footprint of concrete.

The subsidiary of HeidelbergCement introduced EcoCemPLUS Feb. 2, noting it is produced by inter-grinding clinker, fly ash, limestone and gypsum.

“The motivation behind the EcoCem brand of products is to reduce the embodied carbon of cement and concrete,” said Shawn McMillan, vice-president of Cement for Lehigh Hanson’s Canada Region, in a release. “The introduction of EcoCemPLUS to the Prairie market builds on our commitment to providing environmentally responsible types of cement that deliver excellent performance while dramatically reducing CO2 emissions.”

Produced at the company’s Edmonton cement plant, the new product can lower concrete’s carbon footprint by 22 per cent, compared to the company’s general use cement.
