Pomerleau subsidiary Borea picked to build two new Hydro-Québec solar farms

Hydro-Québec has picked Borea Construction to take the lead on building two new solar projects in the Montreal suburbs.
The subsidiary of Saint-Georges, Que.-based Pomerleau will start work next spring on the generating sites that will have a combined capacity of 10 megawatts.
Hydro-Québec, which generates the overwhelming majority of its power from hydro, said the foray into solar will “Allow us to conduct the necessary tests to determine whether solar energy is well adapted to the Québec climate, to our generating fleet and to our transmission system.”
The two solar installations will be built on land already owned by the utility in La Prairie and Varennes. The La Prairie facility will include approximately 26,000 solar panels at the site of the former La Citière thermal generating station. In Varennes, where Hydro-Québec operates a research institute, the utility plans to install about 4,600 solar panels — enough to cover about 10 football fields.
The new solar sites are scheduled to begin generating power next fall.
