Construction firms qualify for Canada Job Grant program

Federal funding for job training is just an application away for construction sector companies in Canada.

The Canada Job Grant program provides funding for training programs offered by eligible third-party trainers, such as community or career colleges, trade union centres or private trainers. Gold Seal certification courses have qualified in the recent past.

The government provides two-thirds of the cost of training, up to a maximum of $10,000 per grant. Employers will be required to contribute the remaining one-third of the training costs. Small businesses with 50 or fewer employees could also benefit from flexible arrangements, such as the potential to count wages as part of their employer contribution.

Training can take place in a variety of settings, including a classroom, at a workplace or online. Funds may be used towards: tuition fees or fees charged by training providers, mandatory student fees; textbooks, software and other required materials; and examination fees.

How it Works

For example, a construction company has an opening for a construction site manager. The company hires a long-time construction worker but they need training in project management. The cost of the training is $1,500. The company applies for and receives a Canada Job Grant for $1,000 and company pays the balance. The worker gets training for a new job and the comany gets the right person with the right skills.
