PCL Construction was pleased to once again be the title sponsor of the 2017 Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR), hosted this year by the University of Manitoba and Red River College’s schools of Engineering at Adrenaline Adventures in Winnipeg.

This was the 43rd occurrence of the annual event, which challenges teams of engineering students from educational institutions across Canada to design, construct, and race a toboggan with concrete running surfaces. Among other guidelines, each creation must weigh less than 300 pounds, hold five passengers, and, most importantly, be safe.

A technical exhibition took place before the race-day where industry judges evaluated entries based on design, technical presentation, construction, and concrete mix. Ultimately, race-day points were awarded for fastest race time, team spirit, and overall best team.

PCL fills more than 500 student placements across Canada annually. The 2017 GNCTR sponsorship allows our companies to connect with future engineers for co-op and permanent positions in our buildings, industrial, and civil infrastructure operations.

As a further example of its commitment to engineering schools, PCL also sponsored the involvement of six individual teams through five scholarships from the following schools:
