A contract for a Northern Ontario highway improvement project has been awarded to the KSMM 2020 construction team, consisting of the Garden River First Nation, Shwe Miikaan Corp. and Miller Paving Ltd.

The Ontario government handed down the $16.9 million package, which covers 20 kilometres of paving work on Highway 17B, last week. The project includes paved shoulders, turning lanes and new lighting on the route, which runs parallel to the Trans-Canada Highway between Echo Bay and Sault Ste. Marie. The work was awarded through Ontario’s Aboriginal Procurement Program.

The KSMM 2020 team is scheduled to start work on Hwy. 17B this summer and complete the work by next fall.

The project is part of a $641 commitment the province has made to road and bridge work in Northern Ontario in 2021-2022.
