Construction on the project is scheduled to take about three years

TORONTO—Infrastructure Ontario has inked a $639.8 million contract to widen a perennially gridlocked segment of Highway 401 on the west end of the Greater Toronto Area.

The crown-owned agency singled out the West Corridor Constructors consortium as the preferred bidder for the project last month and Aecon Group Inc. said April 29 it had finalized the major roadbuilding deal.

Along with Aecon, the build team includes Parsons Inc. and Amico Design Build Inc. Under the design-build-finance (DBF) contract, Parsons, Hatch and EXP are responsible for design, while National Bank will take on the financing.

Construction on the 18-kilometre widening project is scheduled to begin toward the end of this year. The job consists of adding lanes to the busy Ontario highway, which currently spans between six and eight lanes from the Credit River in Mississauga and Regional Road 25 in Milton.

From east to west, the project will expand the 401 to 12 lanes from the Credit River to Winston Churchill Boulevard; 10 lanes from Winston Churchill to the Highway 407 interchange; 12 lanes from the 407 to just east of the James Snow Parkway; and finally to 10 lanes between James Snow and Regional Road 25. High occupancy vehicle lanes will be installed along the median as part of the project. Related bridge upgrades, culvert replacements and utilities work are all included in the scope of work.

The construction team said it expects work on the highway to last about three years. Aecon plans to reach substantial completion on the project in the fourth quarter of 2022.
