Crews overseen by Bird Construction Inc. will start work next month on a new residential project at the northeast edge of downtown Toronto.

Bird said April 26 it has negotiated an approximately $172 million fixed-price contract to build the 53-storey project, known as the Burke, on Sherbourne Street, just south of Bloor Street.

The new residential tower will include 501 units over 466,000 sq. ft. (43,300 square metres), with commercial space on the ground floor and 180 underground parking spaces. Plan also integrate a heritage building currently on the site into the development in the city’s St. James Town neighbourhood.

Developer Concert Properties is targeting a LEED Gold standard for the new building.
