Real-life LEGO

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has introduced the LX03, a fully autonomous, battery-electric prototype wheel loader that was inspired by a Volvo CE/LEGO Technic concept.

Volvo says the LX03 is not only the world’s first example of a self-learning concept wheel loader that has the intelligence to make decisions, perform tasks and interact with humans, but it’s also the first time that a LEGO Technic model has actually been turned into a real machine.

The unit is not commercially available, but the insights gained from this concept will be used in future applications.

“We need to transform the construction industry with smart and more sustainable solutions that will have an impact on a global scale,” says Melker Jernberg, President of Volvo CE.

Volvo CE and LEGO’s collaboration goes back a few years; in fact, in 2018, they used a team of children to provide feedback into what became the 42081 LEGO Technic Concept Wheel Loader ZEUX (see video below).
