JLG Industries Inc. is aiming to safeguard operators with a new technology capable of sensing objects and warning operators before they get too close.

The company said it’s now offering its SkySense technology on most of its boom and scissor lifts and is also making the detection system available to aftermarket customers.

“JLG is committed to discovering new ways to enhance the safer use of our machines,” said Rafael Nunez, JLG senior product manager for scissor, vertical and low-level access lifts, in a release. “Our new SkySense technology demonstrates that commitment with the introduction of this innovation, which is designed to improve the operator experience on the job site.”

The technology uses sensors and “innovative ultrasonic technology” to warn an operator with both visual and audio alerts when a boom or scissor lift gets too close to an object.

The system will also slow down and stop the machine before the lift gets too close. Operators are then able to override the system and inch closer to an object to access hard-to-reach places.
