ONTARIO—Ontario has passed minimum wage legislation, introduced in April, for private-sector contractors in construction, building cleaning and security services.

Under Government Contract Wages Act, 2018, minimum pay-rates will be established for work on government-owned contracts and buildings. It will cover four construction sectors: roads, heavy engineering, sewers and water mains, and industrial, commercial and institutional.

A director of government contract wages may be appointed to establish pay-rates, to be paid by contractors and subcontractors. Rates will take into account collective agreement, Statistics Canada data and other government sources.

The legislation also offers avenues for employees to recover wages, and includes an anti-reprisal mechanism.
