After three years with Quebec-based contractor Pomerleau, Sean Strickland is taking over the executive director role at Canada’s Building Trades Unions (CBTU).
The alliance of more than a dozen unions in the construction, maintenance and fabrication industries represents approximately half a million skilled trades workers across the country. Among other key issues, it focuses on government relations and workforce development.
Sean McGarvey, president of the wider North America’s Building Trades Unions, said Strickland is has the strong leadership experience and understanding of the trades required to take help the CBTU carry out its work.
Strickland spent more than eight years as the CEO of the Ontario Construction Secretariat before moving to Pomerleau as director of business development and industry relations in 2017. He is also an elected regional councillor for Waterloo, Ont.
In the months ahead, Strickland said the focus will be on rebounding from COVID-19.
“Moving ahead, CBTU stands ready to work closely with government and our industry partners to help rebuild our economy as we recover from the effects of this pandemic,” he said in a release. “I will proudly work hard, every day in this role, on behalf of the men and women that belong to the Building Trades, across this country.”
