OTTAWA—The federal government has vowed to enact prompt payment legislation for government contractors in its latest fiscal update.

Along with offering the industry faster capital depreciation on equipment, Ottawa’s Fall Economic Statement released last week promised the new legislation that will speed up the payment process for those working government jobs.

Few specifics have been released, but Public Services and Procurement Canada said the prompt payment rules would cover contractors and sub-contractors working on federal projects on federal lands, as well as the adjudication of payment issues.

The promised legislation follows a months-long consultation period that started earlier this year.
