VANCOUVER—CN Rail is spending $340 million to replace nearly 200 kilometres of line, build new train passing sidings, rebuild crossings and bolster other rail infrastructure on Canada’s West Coast.
The railway company laid out its plan to expand its B.C. network—part of its $3.4 billion 2018 spending plan—June 6.
“We are investing for the long haul with these projects to boost capacity and network resiliency to meet growing traffic on our corridors to and from the West Coast and across B.C.,” said Doug Ryhorchuk, vice-president of CN’s Western Region. He added that the wide-ranging infrastructure equipment upgrades would allow it to deliver superior service.
Among the expansion work is the construction of four new train passing sidings on CN’s line between Prince Rupert, B.C. and Jasper, Alta.
The railway says it will also conduct major maintenance work on its existing rails. It plans to replace nearly 200 km of track outright, rebuild 50 road crossings, install 335,000 new railroad ties and perform maintenance work on bridges, culverts and signal systems.
