Two construction teams have advanced to the next stage of procurement for a work package that includes fitting out a courthouse in Brampton, Ont. and retrofitting an existing facility in Toronto to make way for a new bail centre.

Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and the Ministry of the Attorney General said Aug. 18 they have prequalified a consortium led by Buttcon Ltd., and another headed by Pomerleau Inc., for Phase 2 of the addition to the A. Grenville and William Davis Courthouse in Brampton and construction of a new Toronto Region bail centre at the northwest end of Toronto.

The design, build and finance work in Brampton includes fitting out four floors of a new courthouse — built during phase one of the project — renovations to the existing courthouse and renovations at an adjacent Land Registry building. In total, the scope covers about 130,000 sq. ft.

In Toronto, the winning bidder will be responsible for retrofitting a soon-to-close courthouse facility at 2201 Finch Avenue West to serve as a new bail centre. The bail centre is designed to accommodate all adult bail operations in the city once Toronto’s new downtown courthouse opens in 2022. The work covers approximately 30,400 sq. ft.
