The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador will invest $10.6 million in Municipal Capital works as part of its three-year municipal infrastructure program.
Projects to improve roads, community-oriented infrastructure and water and wastewater systems will be cost-shared by 48 communities – with a municipal share of over $4 million.
As part of the province’s 2017 budget, an additional $18.8 million in provincial funding will be committed to leverage $12.7 million in federal funding under the multi-year Small Communities Fund of the New Building Canada Fund.
Through The Way Forward, the province has committed to leverage federal funding, and this funding will result in total project values of approximately $42.9 million.
“Building and maintaining infrastructure is the foundation of any municipality,” said Jim Organ, executive director of the Heavy Civil Association of Newfoundland and Labrador.
“It enables local businesses to transport goods to market, connects residents and businesses to vital services, employment and education, and leads visitors to every corner of our province. These benefits are in addition to the significant job and economic spin off component, associated with infrastructure spending.”
The provincial government said it will work with the federal government on the second phase of the Investing in Canada Plan – to be announced in the coming months. Approximately, $555.9 million over 10 years has been allocated to Newfoundland and Labrador for cost shared projects under that program.
In March 2017, the province released its three-year municipal infrastructure program. Under this program, $100 million is being provided for Municipal Capital Works and Multi-Year Capital Works to support the development of municipal infrastructure.
