Groupe Robert is expanding its footprint in the Montreal area with a new $150 million distribution centre in Varennes, Que.

The logistics firm announced plans to build the new automated warehouse in the Montreal suburb March 15. Along with company funding, the Fonds de solidarité FTQ is backing the project with a $40 million investment, while the Quebec government is providing a $15 million loan.

Construction Sorel, a general contractor based in Sorel-Tracy, Que., will be leading the major building project.

The new automated facility is designed to store fresh and frozen products and serve as a 3PL (third-party logistics) warehouse for the Boucherville, Que. trucking firm. Groupe Robert said the site will have space 60,000 pallets. Along with automated equipment to speed loading and unloading times, plans for the distribution centre include solar panels, a rainwater collection system and a heat recovery system.
