Saskatchewan company fined $80K after crane strikes scissor lift with worker inside

SASKATOON, Sask.—Crane rental agency Prairie Crane Inc. was slapped with a $80,000 fine after a worker operating a scissor lift was truck by an overhead crane.

The worker suffered serious injuries to his arm and pelvis when the scissor lift was knocked to the ground at a Saskatoon job site Aug. 18, 2016.

Prairie Crane pleaded guilty to violating Occupational Health and Safety regulations in Saskatoon Provincial Court Dec. 10., which require an employer to ensure that no worker is permitted to perform work unless they have been trained, have sufficient experience or are under supervision.

The company was fined $57,143 plus a surcharge of $22,857. One additional charge was withdrawn.
