Port of Quebec moving ahead with $30M infrastructure restoration project

QUEBEC CITY—One of eastern Canada’s largest ports has secured funding for a major restoration project.

Over the weekend, the federal government committed funds to support a $30 million upgrade project aimed at revamping three separate sectors at the Port of Quebec. The work will restore key infrastructure, including rail and road transport links, at Anse au Foulon, Estuaire and Beauport on the St. Lawrence River in central Quebec City.

“This is undoubtedly the most ambitious rehabilitation program our port infrastructure has seen since we were designated a port authority in the late 1990s,” said Mario Girard, president and CEO of the Quebec Port Authority. “It will enable us to better meet the needs of the Canadian economy and growing global demand for marine transportation while also seizing new business opportunities.”

The federal contribution, awarded through the National Trade Corridors Fund, amounts to $15.5 million.

Along with upgrades to adjacent infrastructure, the project will include dock repairs, upgrades to electricity and water networks and the restoration of a drawbridge at Estuaire.

Work on the three projects is expected to create hundreds of construction jobs.
