Pelly Construction wins $44.4M contract for remediation project at contaminated Faro Mine in central Yukon

FinancingFARO, Yukon—A significant remediation project on the site of a contaminated mine northeast of Whitehorse is moving to the next phase.
Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada said May 31 it has awarded Pelly Construction Ltd. a $44.4 million contract for work at Faro Mine — an abandoned lead-zinc mine that opened in 1969 and operated for about 30 years.
The open pit mine about 15 kilometres outside the small town of Faro in central Yukon is one of the largest contaminated sites in the country.
Work on the next phase of the cleanup project centres around realigning North Fork Rose Creek to ensure it won’t come into contact with the contaminated water at the mine.
The Whitehorse-based contractor will be responsible for building a new 1.9-kilometre water channel, new roads and related works. According to the federal government, a diversion channel built earlier this year will direct the creek away from the area while work on the latest project is underway.
