Feds backing construction of new cargo warehouse at Winnipeg airport with $30.4M in funding

WINNIPEG—Construction of a new cargo warehouse at Winnipeg’s James Armstrong Richardson International Airport is poised to get off the ground with tens of millions in backing from the federal government.

Ottawa late last week it plans to spend $30.4 million to help pay for a new 13,000 square metre (140,000 sq. ft.) logistics facility. The Winnipeg Airports Authority will be on the hook for the rest of the building bill, but the total cost of construction was not disclosed.

The new warehouse will increase cargo capacity, as well as include space for cold storage and other perishable goods.

The Manitoba announcement Sept. 6 follows a similar federal deal with Montreal’s Mirabel airport earlier in the month.

Ottawa said the Winnipeg project is expected to create 630 jobs during construction.
