Feds, B.C. partner on $229M program for rural infrastructure upgrades

WHISTLER, B.C.—Municipal Affairs Minister Selina Robinson says the federal and British Columbia governments are targeting rural communities for new infrastructure projects.

She told delegates Sept. 12 at the annual Union of B.C. Municipalities convention in Whistler that $229 million in federal and provincial funds are available for infrastructure projects.

Robinson says the money in the Community, Culture and Recreation and the Rural and Northern Communities funds are available to support local infrastructure developments like community centres and public transit.

She says the Community, Culture and Recreation fund provides access to money to upgrade and build facilities, while the rural fund ensures smaller communities have efficient internet access and public transportation.

Robinson drew applause from the delegates who cheered when she said rural communities will be eligible for up to 100 per cent funding for projects.

The B.C. initiatives are part of the federal government’s Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.
