Transit, cycling infrastructure projects in Kingston, Ont. get $47M from all levels of government

Contractors in Kingston, Ont. are getting a boost from the federal, provincial and municipal governments.

Officials from the three tiers of government were in the city Aug. 10 to announce $47 million in new funding for a series of transit, cycling and pedestrian infrastructure projects.

The work ranges from intersection redesigns and bike lane installations, to the construction of new sidewalks and transit stops.

Among the biggest ticket projects is an approximately $10 million reconfiguration of Montreal Street at John Counter Boulevard, which includes the construction of two transit drop-off lanes, a 770-metre off-road path, 700 metres of buffered bike lanes and work on existing bus shelters. Ottawa will contribute $17 million to the initiatives, while Ontario and Kingston will spend $14.5 million and $16 million, respectively.

With the onset of COVID-19, the federal government has placed as increased focus on cycling and pedestrian paths, among other areas, to help cities adjust to the pandemic. On Aug. 5, it said it would free up funds under it’s 12-year Investing in Canada Plan for such work.
