Spotlight: On-Site rounds-up praiseworthy entries from 2018 photo contest

On-Site unveiled the winning picture and runner-ups for our first-ever Canadian Construction Photo Contest in March — but there are even more submissions that deserve recognition.

Given the sheer number of high quality entries, it was a challenge for the On-Site team to select just a few. With so many photos that captured the diversity of projects across the country, we’ve decided to round-up some of this year’s favourites.

Below, we’ve highlighted a few more shots that showcase the skill of contractors  in the field and behind the lens.

We thank all entrants for their submissions and encourage builders from across the country to hold onto the pictures they snap in 2019. On-Site plans to launch this year’s contest in December.

CROSSLINX TRANSIT SOLUTIONS/METROLINX

Shot from the rooftop lounge of the RioCan Yonge-Eglinton Centre in Toronto, this submission offers a bird’s eye view of construction work on the Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit project.

Submitted by Metrolinx/Crosslinx Transit Solutions (a consortium comprised of Aecon, EllisDon, ASC-Dragados and SNC-Lavalin), the photo depicts the laydown area near the main entrance site for Eglinton Station, just west of the Yonge-Eglinton intersection.

PCL CONSTRUCTORS CANADA INC.

Submitted by PCL’s Ottawa division, the photo highlights rehabilitation work underway on Parliament Hill’s West Block. Among other upgrades, work under the project included replacement of the existing copper roof.

The courtyard has been enclosed with a multi-faceted glazed roof (pictured) over the new House of Commons Chamber. The courtyard infill structure is a composite of structural steel tree column framing, an intersecting steel truss space frame, and a four-layer roof “pillow” assembly. It will serve as the temporary home for the House of Commons as the Centre Block is renovated over the next decade.

Pictured, a 13,000 square foot warehouse expansion into an existing millwork shop facility — Turner’s first “ground-up project” since putting its flag down in the Vancouver construction market in 2011. The concrete tilt-up structure and consisted of a new washroom, staff lunch area and four overhead bay doors.

LAFARGE CANADA

Date: Spring 2018

Shot by Marvin Polis, president of Stimulant Strategies Inc. on behalf of Lafarge Canada (general contractor for the project), this submission shines a light on the rainy conditions workers faced during construction on the Mountain Highway overpass  on the Trans-Canada Highway in north Vancouver.

POMERLEAU

Date: Fall 2018

Slated to wrap up in 2019, work on La Romaine IV — part of a four-phase Hydro-Quebec hydroelectric dam project –is conducted under “extreme weather conditions,” according to Pomerleau. The company installed an isolated camp site located in Quebec’s Côte-Nord region for its team to perform the work.

“Even under those conditions, workers are more motivated than ever by the unique challenges that this project represents,” the company stated. “This picture represents the love we put in our work, the joy of experiencing unique challenges every day, and ultimately the passion with which we do what we do.”

MULTIVISTA

This aerial shot showcases work on the The Amazing Brentwood mall redevelopment project in Burnaby, BC. Spearheaded by developer Shape Properties Corp., the more than $2.3 billion project to build a commercial and residential neighbourhood spans 28 acres and will include an on-site SkyTrain station, 11 residential towers and more than 6,000 homes.
