The redevelopment project calls for a new tower, five new operating rooms, and an expanded emergency department and inpatient facilities.

Dr. Robert Howard, CEO of St. Michael’s Hospital, said this is a significant step towards renewing the hospital. “The future patient care tower and renovations to the emergency department will provide the proper space to be both a downtown trauma centre and a local hospital for a diverse and changing inner city population,” he said. “New technology and design will improve safety, patient outcomes and patient experience.”

The successful bidder is expected to be announced in the spring of 2014, along more details about the length and cost of the project. The hospital will remain publicly owned and controlled.
