The Canadian contractor will be targeting the second half of 2022 to hand over the new plant

Lion Electric Co. has tapped Quebec-based contractor Pomerleau to build its new battery plant and innovation centre in the Montreal subsurbs.

The electric school bus and truck maker picked a 1.6 million sq. ft. site adjacent to the Montreal-Mirabel International Airport for the new facility this spring. It aims to start battery production in the second half of 2022.

Relying on automation, Lion Electric expects to reach annual battery production capacity of five gigawatt hours when the new plant is fully online. Estimates for the construction project total $185 million.

Pomerleau will serve as the project manager and general contractor for the new manufacturing plant.
