2018 was a markedly busy year for Canada’s builders.

Shovels hit the ground coast-to-coast on major infrastructure projects – from early work on the long-awaited Gordie Howe Bridge to the last leg of Calgary’s intricate ring road. Construction also progressed upwards on skyline-altering builds, such as Toronto’s The One and Edmonton’s Stantec Tower, which is now the tallest Canadian building outside Ontario.

To commemorate the flurry of construction activity in 2018, On-Site put out a call for the industry to share the year’s most memorable projects in pictures. The inaugural Canadian Construction Photo Contest encouraged entries from amateurs and professional photographers alike. Among the short list of stipulations, the images needed to be taken on Canadian soil some time in 2018.

The industry didn’t disappoint. Submissions not only shine a spotlight on Canadian construction over the 12-month period, but also display the tenacious drive of the nation’s builders.

Most impressive, though, was the winning shot taken on a Taggart Construction Ltd. job site in the Ottawa area. Gracing the March 2019 issue cover, the photo puts a face to the industry, depicting a labourer rigging a large concrete storm pipe for placement by an excavator at the Hazeldean Craig subdivision in Stittsville, Ont. In recognition of Taggart’s submission, On-Site has made a donation in the company’s name to the charity of its choice, the Ottawa Hospital Foundation.

The On-Site team selected the winning image and five finalists while focusing on composition, originality and intent, clarity and quality, lighting and exposure and colour.

We thank all entrants for their submissions and encourage builders from across the country to hold onto the pictures they snap in 2019. On-Site plans to launch this year’s contest in December.
