Nova Scotia awards construction contracts for hospital expansion project

ConstructionFive Nova Scotia companies and one from Ontario have been awarded contracts for the expansion and renovation of a hospital in Dartmouth, N.S.
The Dartmouth General Hospital renovation is part of the province’s QEII redevelopment project.
The provincial government awarded six of the 17 contracts for the third construction services tender to:
- Atlantica Mechanical, Dartmouth
- Bond and Coolen Contracting, Dartmouth
- Life Safety Systems, Dartmouth
- RKO Steel, Dartmouth
- Southeast Drywall, Dartmouth
- Inflector Environmental Services, Greely, Ont.
These contracts are for the construction of the interior of the new addition and renovations within the existing hospital.
Work includes mechanical, electrical, fire suppression, structural steel, drywalling, demolition and hazardous materials removal.
The total cost of these tenders is over $44.3 million. The remaining 11 contracts for these services will be awarded over the next few weeks.
The expansion and renovations will result in the addition of 48 beds on the fifth floor, as well as eight new operating rooms to replace four existing operating rooms.
The work also includes upgrades to the entrance, outpatient and diagnostic imaging areas.
The QEII redevelopment project also includes the expansion and renovations at the Halifax Infirmary site of the QEII Health Sciences Centre, new and renovated operating rooms at Hants Community Hospital in Windsor, N.S. and the construction of a new community outpatient centre in Bayers Lake, N.S.
This work will allow services to be moved out of the Centennial and Victoria buildings on the Victoria General site, to prepare for their eventual closure.
