Nova Scotia has awarded a $29 million contract for construction of a new parkade in downtown Halifax.

Lindsay Construction Ltd. will build the early component of the QEII New Generation hospital project under a design-build contract. The new 500-car parkade on Summer Street will be built beside the Museum of Natural History on land already owned by the province.

The facility will let crews tear down another parking structure on nearby Robie Street to make way for the hospital expansion — ensuring staff and patients have enough space following demolition. Construction of a larger, 1,000-space parkade is included in the latter stages of the major health care project, which is expected to cost approximately $2 billion.

Two consortia, which include EllisDon and PCL, were shortlisted for the wider hospital project summer. Final bids for the work are due by the end of 2020.

Construction of a pedway between the hospital and new parking lot is also included in the $29 million contract.
