On September 20th, the Federal Bridge Corporation Limited (FBCL) announced the completion and opening of the new Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) Traffic Building, which provides modern and expanded facilities for border operations at the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge.

The opening of the new CBSA traffic building and associated civil works at the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge marks the completion of the next stage of the project. Announced in September 2009, the project was financed through the Gateways and Border Crossings Fund and included the expansion and redesign of the existing Canadian plaza and the construction of a new Duty Free shop and maintenance garage that have been in operation since 2014. FBCL president and chief executive officer, Micheline Dubé wishes to emphasize that “once completed, the new CBSA plaza facilities will be three times larger than the existing operation and will provide new technologies, which will support the use of NEXUS and FAST frequent traveler programs.”

With the completion of this key phase of the Canadian Plaza Redevelopment Project, the new facilities will contribute significantly to the ongoing bridge safety, security and border infrastructure renewal. The next stage of the project, which includes the CBSA Commercial Facilities and the balance of the civil works, will be ongoing through to March 2018.
