Excavation well underway at new $50M residential tower in Victoria, B.C.

Two months of construction have left crews about two-thirds of the way “down the hole” on a new 15-storey residential development near the edge of downtown Victoria, B.C.
Cox Developments started work on the approximately $50 million project, known as the Wedge, at the beginning of August, and has been drilling H-piles, excavating and shotcreting to prepare to start building back toward the surface.
Blackrete Builders Inc. is heading construction on the 93-unit building, which was designed by AVRP Skyport.
The development, located at the corner of Johnson and Vancouver streets, will include commercial space on the ground floor and one- to three-bedroom units on the storeys above. The build team is targeting a LEED Platinum certification for the project, with water conservation, power generation and sustainable materials integrated into the design.
Victoria-based Cox Developments said it expects to start work on the building’s footings and have a crane erected by December. At peak construction, close to 150 workers will be on-site.
The project is scheduled to take about 2 1/2 years to complete, with the tower slated to open in early 2023.
