HALIFAX—Just two build teams will compete for a major hospital expansion project in downtown Halifax.
The Nova Scotia department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal announced last week that EllisDon Infrastructure Healthcare and Plenary PCL Health have qualified to bid for the Halifax Infirmary expansion, which is a major piece of the wider QEII New Generation project.
The winning consortium will be responsible for designing, building, financing and maintaining the expanded infirmary site. While the province has not broken down the costs for individual components of its hospital renewal initiative, the overall project is expected to cost about $2 billion.
Once complete, the new facility will allow the hospital network to shift a number of specialized surgeries and services currently offered at the city’s Victoria General site up the street to the new Halifax Infirmary building. Three aging buildings at the VG site will then be torn down.
The build teams will have until December 2020 to submit their bids.
On the heels of the Halifax hospital announcement, the province also said it plans to move forward on a new community health care centre in Cape Breton Aug. 2.
