MISSISSAUGA, Ont.—Construction on a major hospital project on Toronto’s west end is set to get underway.

Contractor EllisDon said Aug. 14 it has finalized a $1.2 billion contract with Infrastructure Ontario for work on the West Park Healthcare Centre. It plans to begin construction immediately.

The project includes the demolition of three existing hospital buildings and construction of a new 730,000 sq. ft. hospital to replace the aging facilities. The deal to design, build, finance and maintain the site covers a 30-year period.

West Park specializes in long-term patient care and rehabilitation, and plans for the redeveloped site include elements such as green space and landscaped gardens. The new health care building itself will house 314 beds as well as outpatient care space, geriatric clinics and a satellite unit for hemodialysis.
