NEW YORK—After five years of construction, crews in New York City have extended a new tower a block south of Central Park to its full height of 472 metres (1,550 feet) — laying claim to the label of world’s tallest residential building.
Once complete, the “supertall” Central Park Tower at 217 West 57th St. will become the second-tallest building in North America, trailing just One World Trade Center that stands 541 metres (1,776 feet). While a handful of other buildings in Asia, such as the world’s tallest Burj Khalifa, include apartments, the new New York tower will be the tallest in the world made up of predominantly residential space.
Extell Development Co. and a U.S. subsidiary of Shanghai Municipal Investment are co-developing the project, while prominent architecture firm Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture (AS+GG) is behind the design. Canada’s WSP Global Inc. served as the structural engineer and Lendlease is in charge of construction on the multibillion-dollar building.
Situated on “Billionaire’s Row” in midtown Manhattan, a condo in the new tower, unsurprisingly, won’t come cheap.
Due to the slim design of the building and the large size of the units, the Central Park Tower includes just 179 apartments. They range from 2- to 8-bedrooms and cover between 1,435 and 17,500 sq. ft. Currently, the cheapest unit listed is a $6.9 million, 2-bedroom apartment on the 33rd floor.
Along with apartments and residential amenities, a sprawling Nordtrom’s department store will occupy seven floors at the base of the tower.
With upward construction now complete, crews will turn their efforts to remaining exterior and interior work. The new tower is scheduled to fully open by 2020.
