Construction underway on Cambridge OPP detachment

Ground was broken this week for the construction of a new Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment in Cambridge, Ontario.

The $20 million state-of-the-art facility, which will replace the old building that was destroyed by fire in September 2018, will help the OPP serve the Cambridge community. The new detachment will include leading-edge equipment and technology.

“Our government continues to ensure that frontline police have the support and resources they need to keep Ontario’s communities safe,” said Solicitor General Sylvia Jones.

The building, which will be approximately 17,000 sq. feet, will feature a modern infrastructure design to help support the OPP’s technology requirements such as facilities to secure evidence, three holding cells, closed-circuit television technology and other advanced security features.

“This announcement represents another step our government is taking to help build a safer community here in Waterloo Region,” said Mike Harris, Member of Provincial Parliament for Kitchener—Conestoga.

This specific build has been added to Ontario’s OPP Modernization – Phase 2 project, announced in 2018, to replace aging facilities at the end of their lifespan.

“The impressive new Cambridge OPP Detachment, which will be equipped with a Collision Reporting Centre, will provide our officers and civilian members with an accessible and energy-efficient facility to continue to deliver on a shared commitment with our government to safe communities and a secure Ontario,” said OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique.

Construction is expected to be wrapped up by mid-2023.

• The new Cambridge OPP detachment will be located at 1360 Hespeler Rd.;
• The new facility will be accessible and is designed to meet the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Standard, which recognizes buildings with reduced environmental impacts;
• This project will be delivered by Infrastructure Ontario through its public-private partnership (P3) model; and
• Bird Capital OMP Project Co Inc. was selected to lead the design and build of all 10 detachments under the OPP Modernization – Phase 2 project.
