Bridges Construction Infrastructure RoadsBot Construction Group has likely made other construction companies within Ontario’s transportation infrastructure industry green with envy.
The Oakville, Ont.-based company was recently named the 2012 Ontario Road Builders’ Association (ORBA) Green Leadership and Sustainability Award winner.
The award is designed to recognize contractors within the industry for their environmental leadership and sustainability measures in the building of transportation infrastructure in Ontario. Companies are recognized for new products, equipment or management and construction methods that promote sustainability.
The winning company was announced on April 20 by ORBA, in partnership with the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) and the Ontario Good Roads Association (OGRA).
Bot won the award for its creation and implementation of an environmental management system (EMS) that creates a systematic, integrated approach to identifying and mitigating environmental impact risks on construction projects.
Two other companies were also awarded honourable mentions for their commitments to sustainability and using innovative products and processes.
Dufferin Construction, a division of Holcim Canada Inc., was awarded for their use of recycled concrete aggregates in a test section of an MTO highway project in Mississauga, designed to reduce the use of virgin aggregates, which would reduce the number of truck trips to-and-from ready-mix plants.
The Miller Group was acknowledged for developing a modified micro surfacing product that incorporates glass fibres, which is designed to reduce demand for high quality aggregates and improve the performance and life expectancy of existing pavement.
The modified thin-lift pavement product was proposed to and accepted by the County of Lanark and City of Kingston.
The judges for the awards also recognized Miller for promoting the technology and educating owners and contractors about the process.
