Bird Construction shuffles top leadership, McKibbon to take over as president and CEO

TORONTO—Bird Construction Inc. is shaking up its top leadership, appointing industry veteran Terrance McKibbon as its next president and CEO.

McKibbon, who spent more than 20 years at Aecon Group Inc. before joining Bird as chief operating officer in 2017, will take the helm at the Toronto-based builder effective June 30.

Ian Boyd, the company’s current president and CEO, will remain with the company and head up the company’s Major Projects division as executive vice-president.

“After leading the company and guiding it through a period of significant transition since 2015, it is time for new leadership to drive the company forward,” Boyd said in a release “Teri was an important addition when I recruited him two years ago and he is now ready to take the helm. I look forward to continuing to support Bird’s diversification strategy in my new role, focusing on what I am most passionate about — major projects.”

Paul Charette, chair of the company’s board, said the change of roles will benefit the contractor as it continues to diversify its services, sectors and client base.

“Given his experience and skillset, Teri McKibbon is well suited to assume overall leadership of a more diversified business with a focus on increasing margins and growth,” he said. “At the same time, large complex projects have become an increasingly important component of our strategy. These major projects, whose size and complexity are only growing, require management capabilities and dedicated executive oversight beyond that which is typical of most projects. This is Ian Boyd’s area of greatest strength and passion.”

McKibbon will be tasked with the overall leadership of Bird’s business, including its strategic development and profitability.
