The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) launched an awareness campaign on July 31, designed to make the construction industry aware of new rules and encourage people working in the sector to pre-register for coverage.

The campaign dubbed, “Be Registered, Be Ready,” is about mandatory WSIB coverage that will be required for almost every person working within the construction industry, starting January 1, 2013.

Presently, construction employers are required to have WSIB coverage for their employees; however, starting next year, coverage will be required for the majority of people working in the industry, including: independent
operators, sole proprietors, partners and executive officers in a corporation working in construction. The Government of Ontario has changed the law to include business owners, in addition to construction workers. Starting January 2013, executive officers and partners of businesses that are already registered with the WSIB will be required to report their earnings and pay premiums.

The WSIB’s awareness campaign will run for the remainder of 2012.
